Vanished in Indy: A Daughter's Fight for April Marie Garcia

Behind The Filter Podcast: Unfiltered Weekly

It has been nearly one year since April Marie Garcia walked out of her home on the South Side of Indianapolis and into a void that has left her family—and a community—desperate for answers. In this edition of Behind The Filter: Unfiltered Weekly, we spoke with April’s eldest daughter, Alexis Ibarra, who is fighting a cross-country battle from California to keep her mother’s name alive.

What emerges is a story of a woman who was much more than a statistic. April is a mother of four, a grandmother of two, a dancer, and a woman whose laughter could fill a room. But behind that laughter, a darker story of manipulation and fear was unfolding in the weeks before she disappeared.

The Night She Vanished

On April 1, 2025, around 11:00 PM, April left her residence in the 400 block of Sandra Lane. She was captured on a neighbor’s Ring camera—the last visual evidence that she was safe. At the time, she was wearing a black hoodie, black sweatpants, and white shoes.

The circumstances of her departure are deeply troubling. Alexis reveals that April left behind everything she needed to survive: her ID, her cell phone, and her life-saving epilepsy medication. "Usually, she’s really good at keeping contact with us," Alexis says. "This was out of the ordinary. I got a weird gut feeling that something was wrong."

A House of Shadows: Patterns of Manipulation

Through her investigation, Alexis has uncovered a disturbing atmosphere within the home where April lived prior to her disappearance. While we are withholding specific names to protect the integrity of the case, the patterns surfacing suggest April was trapped in a "calculated environment" of intimidation.

  • Domestic Tensions: Alexis describes a volatile household where April was allegedly subjected to verbal and physical threats. Reports indicate that on the night before she went missing, a major altercation occurred involving a weapon.

  • The Financial Red Flags: A significant piece of this puzzle involves a government-issued check—possibly related to disability or tax back-payments—that surfaced around the time April vanished. Allegations suggest this money was accessed and spent by others while April remained missing, raising the possibility of a "payday" motive behind her silencing.

  • Strategic Silencing: Those close to April believe there was a coordinated effort to use her past struggles with substance use and mental health against her. By painting her as "unreliable," certain parties may have attempted to lead authorities to believe she simply "relapsed and ran," distracting from the reality of the domestic conflict.

The "Gaps" in the Official Story

The investigation, led by IMPD, has utilized cadaver dogs in the wooded areas near Garfield Park, but no scent was found. Alexis remains skeptical of the "official" timeline and the rumors of April being moved in a trash container.

"A lot of the stories don't make sense to me," Alexis says. "How is that even possible for someone to disappear like that and not have any trace? I feel like someone knows something and they don't want to speak the truth because they know they’ll get in trouble."

A Message of Faith and Forgiveness

Despite the agony of the unknown and the cruelty of "ransom" scams the family has endured, Alexis holds onto a profound sense of peace.

"Whatever happened to her, as a Christian, I forgive you," Alexis says, addressing whoever might be responsible. "I can't hold hatred in my heart. God brings everything to light, and He will bring her home when He knows it’s time."
